Fences, 2014

Iowa’s only black theatre company

In the summer of 2014 the Des Moines Social Club hired Ken-Matt Martin to produce and direct August Wilson's Fences. The following summer, in 2015, Pyramid Theatre Company was founded under the leadership of Martin and Artistic Director, Jiréh Breon Holder. Our founding members include Tiffany Johnson, Freddie Fulton, Nana Coleman, Alexis Davis, and Claudine Cheatem.

Since then, Pyramid has produced 10 plays that feature the work and performances of Black artists, and has also been involved in the community, empowering and working with students, partnering with other nonprofit local organizations that serve this community, and creating awareness about social issues that need to be addressed, especially in the climate of civil unrest that we face today.

OUR MISSION

The mission of Pyramid Theatre Company is to provide a gateway to the arts for the Des Moines community by illuminating the presence of Black artists in the theatre canon and providing a means of artistic expression to emerging Black voices.

The company commits itself to the tenet of Sankofa, a word in the Akan language of Ghana meaning “return to retrieve.” With this in mind, PTC will offer works firmly rooted in the lessons of the past in order to serve needs of the present.

Our Involvement:

Some of the past events, partnerships, and accomplishments we’ve made include:

  • Partnering with Back2School and MAV - (Mothers Against Violence) to provide free school supplies for local school-age children

  • Promoting the 21-Day Equity Challenge by United Way of Central Iowa, raising public awareness on racial inequality in our society

  • Supporting local Black-owned businesses by celebrating the accomplishments of local business owners

  • Making the list of nationally-recognized Black Theatre Companies by Black Theatre Matters

  • Partnering with the Iowa Architectural Foundation to produce a music video for the virtual event, “Everyone is Served: Celebrating New Life for the Edna Griffin Building”

  • Supporting youth in our local neighborhoods and providing useful information and access to the arts for students who are interested

  • Participating in discussion groups for Bravo and The Arts Council
