About the show:
Black Studies professor Beatrice “Bea” Free confronts her past and the parts of herself she wants to ignore as she drafts “The Black Feminist Guide to the Human Body.” With guidance from her body (Cee Cee) and soul (Dee), Bea ends up constructing a love letter to Black women and girls, from her memories, dreams, hopes, and wonder. Part spiritual mixed tape, roadmap, “us” help book, and collective diary of nursery rhymes, sacred stories, praise dances, and love songs, this choreopoem urges us to honor all our pieces, even the broken ones.
“The Black Feminist Guide to the Human Body” is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation & Development Fund Project co-commissioned by The Lorraine Hansberry THEATRE (Sew Productions Inc.), The Vortex, Fusebox Austin, Pyramid THEATRE Company, and NPN. The Creation & Development Fund is supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts (a federal agency).
