ABOUT THE SHOW:
Black Studies professor Beatrice “Bea” Free confronts her past and the parts of herself she wants to ignore as she drafts “The Black Feminist Guide to the Human Body.” With guidance from her body (Cee Cee) and soul (Dee), Bea ends up constructing a love letter to Black women and girls, from her memories, dreams, hopes, and wonder. Part spiritual mixed tape, roadmap, “us” help book, and collective diary of nursery rhymes, sacred stories, praise dances, and love songs, this choreopoem urges us to honor all our pieces, even the broken ones.
“The Black Feminist Guide to the Human Body” is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation & Development Fund Project co-commissioned by The Lorraine Hansberry THEATRE (Sew Productions Inc.), The Vortex, Fusebox Austin, Pyramid THEATRE Company, and NPN. The Creation & Development Fund is supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts (a federal agency). Beautiful audience,
It is with immense honor and gratitude that I welcome you to this transformative production. Directing this guide I have had the privilege of being part of this remarkable piece of work, a choreopoem that transcends traditional labels and speaks directly to the hearts of Black women.
I met the playwright in 2019 before the pandemic reshaped our world. We immediately shared experiences, laughter, and a deep understanding of the power of storytelling. Now, as we gather here in our own city, I am filled with joy at the opportunity to support her vision and bring it to life on this stage.
Let me be clear: What you will see in this production is not a play, It is a love letter, an ode to resilience, beauty, and complexity of Black womanhood. Our lives unfold before you, raw and unfiltered. The emotions are palpable, the memories vivid, and the truths we share are too profound to be confined within the boundaries of a traditional theatrical framework.
This choreopoem is our reality, a collective tapestry woven from our lived experiences, our joys, and our sorrows. It serves as a guide, illuminating the path forward for our bodies and those of future generations. As we navigate the intricacies of existence, we do so with the wisdom of those who came before us. Their shoulders bear our weight, and their strength empowers us to stand tall.
Pyramid Theatre has been my sanctuary, a place where I've learned profound lessons about identity, heritage, and the richness of our shared experiences. It has made my shoulders stronger, my steps lighter, and my heart more resolute. To each member of our audience, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. Your presence completes this circle, and I hope you find solace, inspiration, and joy in the art we present.
With love,
Tiffany Johnson
